Under a waver, granted by the state of New York, Dr. David Tauber of DeLuca Plastic Surgery has resumed performing surgeries at Albany Medical Center’s South Clinical Campus – working overtime to clear the back-log of cases.

Dr. David Tauber has a waiting list of patients whose surgeries were postponed when New York imposed a moratorium on non-emergent procedures. That moratorium went into effect this past March in response to the rapid spread of COVID-19 in the state.

Since the moratorium began, DeLuca Plastic Surgery has continued to safely serve its patients and the surrounds community. We have closely monitored the situation in the Capital Region.

Over the last month, we have not seen the surge in patients that have been seen in other areas of the state. The area’s hospitals have maintained a workable patient load and have never needed to use their surge capacity for treatment of COVID-19 patients.

Based on a tiered system established by the state of New York, the staff of DeLuca Plastic Surgery have starting contacting patients originally scheduled with Dr. David Tauber for short (1hr) for simple surgeries that were postponed due to the COVID-19 moratorium. Patients will be asked if they wish to schedule their surgeries as appropriate. Surgical slots are currently limited to Albany Medical Center’s South Clinical Campus for Tier One patients of Dr David Tauber with short surgeries.

Under the requirements of the waver, staff and physicals are subject to screening and PPE use and all patients will be required to have a negative COVID-19 test prior to surgery. This COVID-19 testing will for be arranged for by pre-surgical testing.

Following New York State guidelines, surgeries will be phased in using a tier system intended to protect patient safety and maintain social distancing. The tier system initially prioritizes simple, short (1hr) surgeries with minimal expected use of PPE and methodically progresses to longer (2+ hour), more complicated surgeries over the next couple months.

Tier One:

  • Beginning Week of May 11th
  • Cases with less than 1-hour surgical time
  • Minimal use of surgical supplies, PPE conservation

Tier Two:

  • Tentatively Beginning Week of May 25th
  • Cases less than 2-hour surgical time
  • Increased use of surgical supplies and PPE conservation

Tier Three:

  • Date TBD Based On Tier Two Response
  • Cases less than 2-hour surgical time
  • Increased surgical volume
  • Increased use of PPE and surgical supplies

Tier Four:

  • Date TBD Based On Tier Three Response
  • Resume regular schedule and volume
  • Regular use of PPE and surgical supplies

Surgical slots are currently limited to Tier One patients of Dr. David Tauber. The staff of DeLuca Plastic Surgery have starting contacting patients originally scheduled with Dr. David Tauber for short (1hr) for simple surgeries that were postponed due to the COVID-19 moratorium. In addition, patients of Dr. Tauber, with longer surgeries (less then 2 hours), will be eligible for scheduling the week of May 25th. Patients will be asked if they wish to schedule their surgeries as appropriate.
