How Young Is Too Young for a Nose Job?

You might be considering rhinoplasty or have a young adult who already thinks they need a nose job. Or you may be someone who has trouble breathing properly due to the structure of your nose. Rhinoplasty procedures can be effective for achieving that certain aesthetic you’re aiming for or solving your breathing issue, but at what age is it appropriate to start seriously considering a nose job? Similarly, is there an age too old for rhinoplasty? No matter how long you’ve been considering having a procedure, it’s good to understand how it’s done and how long the recovery will take.

What Is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty, more commonly referred to as a “nose job” or “nose reshaping” enhances the facial harmony and proportions of your nose. If you have impaired breathing due to structural defects in your nose, you might also consider rhinoplasty as a solution.

What Does Rhinoplasty Treat?

  • Nose width at the bridge or in the size and position of the nostrils
  • Symmetry of nostrils
  • Large, wide, or upturned nostrils
  • Bulbous, drooping, upturned, or hooked nasal tips
  • Nose profile with visible humps or depressions on the bridge
  • Nose size in proportion to facial balance

Am I A Good Candidate for Rhinoplasty?

First thing’s first, you should only consider rhinoplasty if you actually desire to have it done, not to please someone else or to fit into society’s idea of “beauty.”

Good candidates of rhinoplasty are physically healthy, don’t smoke, and have a realistic goal in mind for the improvement of their appearance.

Poor health and certain chronic conditions will make you a poor candidate because they increase the risks of any surgical procedure.

It’s important to walk into your rhinoplasty with realistic expectations because no one has a “perfect nose.” Rather, you should only be hoping to improve its current look and feel.

How Young Is Too Young For Rhinoplasty? How Old Is Too Old?

Most rhinoplasty patients are between the ages of 18 and 50 years old. To be a good candidate for rhinoplasty, your facial growth must be complete. Your face and nose don’t stop developing until your late teens or later, you wouldn’t want to make any changes to it now that you might want to change again later. If you’re under the age of 18, wait a few years and you may be a good candidate then.

Be prepared to discuss your aesthetic and/or breathing goals as well as your medical history during your consultation. Ask a lot of questions and keep the communication clear between you and your surgeon to avoid yielding results that don’t accomplish what you had in mind.

How Does Rhinoplasty Procedure Work?

Appropriate techniques of rhinoplasty include:

  • Alteration and reshaping of the nasal bridge
  • Altering the shape or width
  • Reshaping the nasal tip
  • Reducing the width or size of the nostrils
  • Adjusting the angle between the nose and upper lip

Since the goal of most rhinoplasties is to improve the balance and proportion of your face, surgery to improve an obstructed airway is an individualized procedure that requires careful assessment of the nasal structure as it relates to airflow and breathing. A deviated septum is a common cause of breathing impairment and correction is achieved by adjusting the nasal structure to gain better alignment.

What’s the Difference Between An Open and Closed Procedure?

In a closed procedure, the incisions are hidden inside the nostril, whereas in an open procedure the incision is made across the narrow strip of tissue that separates the nostrils. The soft tissues that cover the nasal skeleton will be slightly raised, allowing for access to reshape the structure of the nose.

Surgery can reduce or change nasal structures with the use of cartilage grafted from other areas of your body. Once the structure of the nose is sculpted, nasal skin and tissue are re-draped and incisions are closed. It’s most likely that splints and packing will support the nose as is heals.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Some common healing will include swelling, bruising, headache, and discomfort that you can control with medicine and a cold compress. Your surgeon will instruct you to keep your head elevated at all times until swelling has subsided.

After the first week, any packing or internal splints will be typically be removed.

The outcome of the surgery will appear gradually over time as the swelling goes down and the improved appearance becomes more visible. At a minimum, a year is the usual amount of time it will take for a nose reshaping to fully refine. The results are permanent, however, the main supporting structure of the nose is continually growing and moving tissue that may change the outcome over time.

How Much Does Rhinoplasty Cost?

The cost of your nose reshaping will vary depending on your condition and desired outcome. DeLuca Plastic Surgery works with many financing companies to offer payment options.

Before your rhinoplasty is scheduled, you will be able to schedule a consultation to discuss your medical conditions and aesthetic desires. Again, be sure to ask a lot of questions and keep the communication clear with your surgeon.

Post-Procedure Care

Post-procedure is just as important to your surgeon as it is to you! After your procedure, you will be required to see your surgeon to be sure everything went as it should have. Typically, patients will come in for their post-op checkups one week, one month, six months, and a year after the reshaping. However, you can come in as often or as little as you feel the need to, as some patients may have more questions than others. At DeLuca Plastic Surgery, there is no charge for post-op visits and we will open our schedule to see you anytime following your surgery.
