A cosmetic rhinoplasty is a surgery that reduces and repositions tissue in the nose for better aesthetics. This often involves straightening the dorsal profile, reducing dorsal humps, reshaping the tip, and possibly narrowing the width of the nose.
For a nose that is lacking projection and definition, grafting techniques may be needed to build up projection of the tip and strengthen the dorsum.
For some patients, however, cosmetic concerns are limited to a subtle bump or other minor contour irregularity. For these patients a non-surgical rhinoplasty is an option.
A non-surgical rhinoplasty uses fillers, off-label, to camouflage small deformities in the nose by adding volume. This approach could be used to bring up the height of your upper dorsum – smoothing the profile and making the dorsum look flat. The trade-off is a slightly larger looking nose.
A thin to moderate thickness facial filler made of hyaluronic acid is used to achieve these results. Typical fillers include Juvederm Ultra Plus or Volbella or Restylane L or Silk. The filler is added to depressed areas of the nose to smooth the contour and ease the transition from the bump to the surrounding tissue.
The treatment takes less then 30 minutes and is performed in the office under topical anesthesia. Results are what-you-see is what-you-get and last 6-9 months for the average patient.
A detailed examination will help delineate the best surgical treatment. The goal of a rhinoplasty is to create an aesthetic nose with the size and shape that is desired by the patient.
During your consultation, measurements of the nose are used as a starting point to recommend a treatment. For some patients, digital computer simulations are used to help visualize the likely result.
