Fullness of the neck due to excess neck fat can be treated with both invasive and non-invasive strategies. Reduction of this fat can give better definition to the jaw like and neck and make patients look younger and more fit.

Kybella

Kybella is a non-invasive injection that has been recently approved by the FDA to help improve the appearance of fullness associated with the submental fat of the neck in adults. Young adults, with a moderate amount of excess fat and good skin tone are usually good candidates.

During a office based Kybella treatment, the neck is first cleaned and numbed with topical lidocaine. A pattern is drawn on the neck and the product is injected into the fat of the central neck – dissolving the fat. The body then absorbs the fat over several weeks. There is swelling that occurs and may be bruising and some numbness in the area during this time. The injections are usually done once every six weeks and it usually it usually takes at least two treatments to achieve the desired improvement.

The treatment takes about 15 minutes each session. The cost is variable depending on the amount of fat to be treated, however, most patients are started with a 2 treatment package priced at $1900 in our office.

Neck Liposuction

Liposuction of the neck is a surgery during which small cannulas are used to suck the fat from the neck. This procedure is done through a small stab incision under the chin and can be performed under general anesthesia, with sedation, or even using only local anesthesia in the right patient. In many cases, liposuction is performed as part of a larger procedure such as a face and neck lift, however, isolated liposuction of the neck is also common.

Recovery after liposuction can last several weeks during which swelling, bruising, and numbness are common. Patients wear a neck support strap for the first week 24-7 and then during the second week at night. The sutures are removed at about a week.

The cost is variable depending on the facility and anesthesia fees but usually runs about $3500 when performed in the OR under anesthesia.

Which Neck Fat Treatment is Right For Me?

Patients who are looking for a minimally-invasive procedure but are willing to accept that multiple treatments may be necessary for an optimal result are good candidates for treatment of the neck fat with Kybella. Patients who want a more immediate outcome but are willing to have a surgical procedure performed (or are already in the OR for another operation) are good candidates for liposuction of the neck. In both cases the ideal candidates are young patients with excess fat localized to the middle of the neck, good skin tone, and no excess skin.

As with any cosmetic surgery, realistic expectations are important.
