There has always been a fascination with women’s posteriors; however, over the last few years, plastic surgeons have seen the demand for the Brazilian butt lift skyrocket. This new-found focus has still not eclipsed breast augmentation or liposuction as the procedure of choice; however, the influence of celebrities such as Kim Kardashian and Nicki Minaj has caused demand to surge 58% over the last year. Dr. David Tauber of DeLuca Plastic Surgery has similarly seen requests for buttock augmentation increase during the same time period. In response to this demand, Dr. Tauber has recently begun offering patients the world famous Brazilian butt lift.
The Brazilian butt lift is a surgery that combines liposuction of the lower back, buttock, and thighs with fat transfer to the buttock to improve the size and shape of the buttock. The operation takes place in the operating room under general anesthesia and is performed through multiple small “stab” incisions using a small tube to extract and inject the fat.
A butt augmentation is a powerful procedure for contouring the buttock, and it can be done alone or in concert with a breast augmentation or abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) for total body rejuvenation. Dr. David Tauber tailors all of these services to each individual patient.
Ideal patients are women with average sized buttocks and an ample amount of fat available for transfer. Larger women will likely not see much of difference even after significant grafting, and thin women may not have enough fat available to transfer. Whether or not an individual is a good candidate for this procedure will be discussed in detail during the consultation.
During the initial consultation, candidates will meet with Dr. Tauber to discuss cosmetic goals. Dr. Tauber will explain the procedure in detail and conduct an examination to see whether a Brazilian butt augmentation is a good procedure for the candidate. He will consider factors like buttock shape and size, skin quality, fat donor sites, and whether the patient hopes to undergo other procedures at the same time.
The operation begins with liposuction of the lower back, thighs, and other donation sites to harvest the fat needed for the transfer. This improves the lower back contour and improves the shape of the buttock in relationship to the surrounding tissue, accentuating the buttock. The collected fat is specially treated and transferred to syringes. Dr. Tauber then injects the fat into the buttock through small “stab” incisions hidden in the buttock creases. The fat injection increases the size of the buttock and is evenly distributed to give the buttock a lifted, fuller, and more balanced appearance.
After a Brazilian butt lift fat transfer procedure, patients should expect bruising and swelling in the treated areas. This swelling usually worsens at first and then begins to settle in about a week. The patients wear a compressive garment for four to six weeks that helps smooth the contour of the treated areas. In addition, the patient should refrain from sitting on the grafted areas for at least two weeks to help encourage graft take. Patients are usually able to go back to work within a week from surgery.
The final result of a butt augmentation is influenced by what shape the patient has to start with, the retraction of the skin after liposuction, the amount of fat grafted, and how much fat survives (50%-70%). Patients may require more than one round of grafting depending on their desired results.
Patients can resume normal activities and exercise after eight weeks. At that time, the compressive garment should no longer be necessary, and patients can safely sit on the buttock area again.
Because of swelling after the surgery, true results will likely not be evident until three to six months after the procedure. However, the results are long lasting under normal circumstances. Because the transferred fat is your body’s organic tissue, it will grow and age with the rest of you, likely staying in place for the rest of your life.
Patients should arrange for someone to drive them home after surgery and stay with them for at least the first night. Assistance can also be helpful during the two or more weeks that patients avoid sitting. For example, patients who are used to driving might ask a friend or relative to deliver groceries or other essentials to their home. Also, patients with sedentary jobs, such as office work, should arrange time off for the weeks following the surgery.
Most buttock augmentation with fat grafting procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, so patients will be allowed to go home after a short observation period. However, there will be at least one follow-up appointment, which will be scheduled before the procedure takes place. During follow-up visits, Dr. Tauber will make sure the healing process is proceeding as normal and discuss the results in comparison to the original aesthetic goals. If at any time during recovery a patient grows concerned about complications, they should call DeLuca Plastic Surgery right away, rather than waiting for their follow-up appointment.
